IPIN Tip of the Month: Accessing Specifications

Builders Exchange members with an upgraded membership have full access to the construction documents for every project posted to the Builders Exchange Online Planroom, including  the specifications.

Specifications are available in PDF format, but there are a variety of ways to access them in the Builders Exchange Online Planroom

Downloading Whole Spec Books (NEW FEATURE)

Builders Exchange is now providing one click access to the entire specification booklet in one PDF file.

The link to the PDF containing the whole spec book will always be listed at the top of the index of specifications. It will be labeled “Whole Spec Book” with the spec section number of “00000”:

If there are multiple volumes of specifications, each volume will be available separately. Volume 1 will be listed as  “Whole Spec Book Vol. 1”, Volume 2 as “Whole Spec Book Vol. 2”, etc.

Left click to open the spec in your browser, or right click and choose “Save Target As” (when using Internet Explorer) to save the file to your computer.

Downloading Individual Spec Sections

Builders Exchange also separates each spec book into it’s component sections as listed by its table of contents, processes the specifications through optical character recognition (OCR) for SAM Search, and indexes each section for spec index searching.

Each section is available in PDF format by left clicking on the name of the section. This will open a PDF of the spec within your browser. The PDF can also be downloaded to your computer by right clicking and saving the file.

Downloading Multiple Individual Spec Sections (Batch Download)

To download multiple individual spec sections, first left click the box to the left of each spec section you would like to download.

Next, click the “Download” button at the top of the specs.

You will then be prompted to download a zip file which contains each of the separate spec sections in PDF format. Save the zip file to your desktop. Once it is finished downloading, open the zip file to access each of the spec sections  marked for downloading.

IPIN Tip of the Month: Adding Your Company to a Bidders List

Builders Exchange of Kentucky maintains a list of companies which have expressed strong interest in a project on the Project Details page. This bidders list shows companies who will likely submit a bid on the project. Companies added to the Builders Exchange bidders lists come from a variety of  sources, but they  are most often taken from the official planholders list kept by the primary owner or design team for the project. These lists can often be found at the reprographics company which has been chosen to distribute project documents.

Builders Exchange updates bidders lists a minimum of once every week before the bid date, with a final update the day before the bid date.

Members of Builders Exchange have the ability to add their company to the Builders Exchange bidders list at any time from the Project Details page of each project by following these steps:

Roofing Systems Seminar Presented by Builders Exchange of Kentucky and AIA-Central Kentucky Chapter

The program provides a way for interns, emerging professionals and design professionals to learn about roofing fundamentals. It is designed for those new to the roofing industry or anyone who needs to understand roof assemblies and how the industry operates.

This program will establish the roles of the team members in the commercial roof construction process. We shall discuss roof analysis as it relates to the design process. This shall lead to proper detailing of construction documents which assists in good bidding. We shall also speak to the issues of quality control during the construction phase.

Roof management shall be presented as a means and method of organized roof maintenance. It is a program of collaboration between building owners, architects, and roof professionals to properly manage the assets of the roof system to cost effectively add more life to the existing roof.

The method of instruction is multi-sensory with both classroom instruction and hands-on training and demonstration. The Roofing Systems Seminar assists owners, design professionals and roof contractors to coordinate all of the increasing complexities in the roof industry to arrive at a satisfactory point of long-term performance of their roof systems.

New employees, customers, facility managers, building owners, and design professionals will benefit from this program which reviews design, installation and maintenance for low-slope (typically commercial) roof systems.

The seminar will be presented on August 21, 2012.

This seminar is free of charge to AIA members and all IDP Candidates. A charge of $25 will apply to all others.
